Tax Investigations
An enquiry, investigation or check carried out by HM Revenue & Customs can be a difficult experience as well as expensive in terms of additional tax, interest and penalties.
Expert advice and assistance can often make a substantial difference to the eventual amount due and the duration of the investigation as well as minimising the pressure on you. EDF Tax has extensive experience of negotiation with HMRC and a deep understanding of the process and the key issues such as forensic investigation, handling meetings with Inspectors, HMRC’s information powers and penalties to ensure you have the best possible representation.
We advise on all types of enquiry into individuals, companies and employers under the Codes of Practice (COP) COP 11, COP 14 and COP 3 as well as on disclosures, Civil Investigation of Fraud enquiries and Specialist Investigations under COP 8 and COP 9.
Iain Macleod our tax investigations leader was a Tax Inspector for 26 years and served as a District Inspector and Area Director. He was also with a Big 4 firm for 4 years as a Tax Investigations specialist. He has worked closely with clients on all types of enquires, including cases with Special Civil Investigations (now Specialist Investigations) and Civil Investigation of Fraud, obtaining many excellent solutions. Combining inside knowledge of HMRC and a close understanding of Inspectors’ thinking and approach with a sympathetic awareness of clients’ needs and the pressures on them he brings an ideal mix of skills to get the best results possible.
Other members of the EDF Tax team also have Tax Investigations experience so we have the skills and resources to handle all types of enquiries up to the largest and most complex.
EDF Tax do not prepare accounts or Tax Returns so your existing accountants retain these roles. We are flexible on how best to support you. We can take on the working of an enquiry until resolution engaging directly with you. We can advise you or your accountant on the conduct of the enquiry in the background or be engaged to handle a specific item like a meeting, a penalty demand or a Tribunal hearing.
